The Department for Transport (DfT) has been considering increasing the age a vehicle gets its first MOT, from 3 years to 4 years. However, the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) is concerned that the proposed changes will be more injurious to purchaser’s overall.

The Department for Transport (DfT) are presenting three alternative options:

  1. Continue the current period for vehicles requiring a first MOT at three years.
  2. Extend current first MOT requirements from 3 years to 4 years.
  3. As option 2, disqualifying van in grading 4 and 7, that will preserve the current MOT regulations.

The Government currently is in strong support options 2 and 3. With the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) favoring option 1.

RMI Director comments, “At the three year period alone this change will see 400,000 unroadworthy cars on the road for another 12 months and no official mileage recorded until year 4.”

The RMI is part of ProMOTe, a broad‐based coalition representing road safety groups, motoring organizations, and industry bodies and all are opposed to this proposal.
